Motivational Interviewing is a clinical approach that helps people with mental health and substance use disorders and other chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, and asthma make positive behavioral changes to support better health. This approach was developed over 30 years ago based on the concept that the treatment/management of many health care concerns involves behavior change.
While most health care practitioners have conversations regarding behavior/habit changes, most practitioners are not adequately trained to have the types of conversations that engage their patients. Motivational Interviewing changes the style of conversations from what may be looked as a “lecture” into an engaging 2-sided conversation that is focused on strengthening a person’s own motivation for commitment to change.
Central New York Care Collaborative is offering our partners the opportunity to participate in Motivational Interview Training in hopes that we can help to create to a self-sustaining network of committed motivational interviewing practitioners and trainers across our region. We are covering the cost of the training in addition to providing stipends to partner organizations for selected applicants who participate in and complete Basic Motivational Interview Training as follows:

Motivational Interviewing Training Overview & Description
Training will be facilitated by Jim Riter, a member of the Motivational Interviewing Committee. The training will be held in Syracuse, NY.
We are currently funding Motivational Interview Training for 2 of the 5 Motivational Interview Training program levels for interested partners, as well as offering a stipend for staff who attend to offset any operational costs.
Foundations of Motivational Interviewing | 2-Hour Online Course
Suggested for anyone in your organization who may be interested in learning more about the basics of Motivational Interviewing and who may interact with patients. And is required for anyone interested in participating the additional levels of training.
Goal: Integrate the concepts and spirit of Motivational Interviewing
Level 1 [Basic] 2-Day In-Person Course
Suggested for direct care staff and/or supervisors.
Goal: Learners will receive instruction of Motivational Interviewing competencies and participate in hands on practice applying skills/techniques learned to be utilized in their everyday work.
Level 2 [Intermediate] + Level 3 [Advanced]
Suggested for participants who have completed the previous level(s) and want to advance their skills.
Goal: To provide participants with additional tools and techniques to enhance their skills.
Level 4 | Train the Trainer
Intended for participants who have completed all previous levels and would like to become a certified Motivational Interview Trainer.
Goal: Participants will be given resources, tools, guidance, and support that will enable them to successfully facilitate Motivational Interview Trainings in the future.

> Once you have completed the Foundations of Motivational Interviewing you will be eligible to participate in the 2-Day In-Person course Basic Motivational Interview Training. Contact Training Manager Ebony Pengel to verify your eligibility.
